Editorial policy
How Pleasant Hearth product pages and guides are written, where their facts and safety statements come from, and what never appears on pleasant-hearth.net.
The people who run the Pleasant Hearth catalog write the pages on pleasant-hearth.net. Here is how a fact reaches a page.
Product pages
Opening ranges, frame sizes, door styles, glass, mesh, finishes, grate bars, tool counts, BTU ratings and fuel types come from our own product data. When two descriptions of one piece disagree, we print the more careful figure or leave the figure out. A door page shows an opening range only for the sizes our data carries one for.
Guides and the journal
Our guides explain how to measure for, choose and use hearth products. Every measurement in them belongs to a product they name, and the advice on measuring comes from how our doors, screens and grates are built.
Safety statements
A statement about fire, chimneys, embers, carbon monoxide or vent-free gas appears only when a named public source makes it: the National Fire Protection Association, the U.S. Fire Administration, the Environmental Protection Agency, the Consumer Product Safety Commission, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the Chimney Safety Institute of America or the California Health and Safety Code. We read each source before citing it, keep the sentence within what the source says, and print the source with the date we read it.
Where no source we have read supports a claim, the claim stays off the site. We do not say that glass doors save heat, that a vent-free appliance belongs in a bedroom, or that a product is certified to a standard, unless a named source says so about that product.
What we never publish
We never publish invented reviews, ratings that shoppers did not give, awards, testimonials under made-up names or counts of customers. Where a product page shows a star rating and a review count, those are the totals shoppers gave that piece.
Photographs
The photographs show our own products. Pictures with slogans or claims printed across them stay off the site.
Corrections
If a size, a finish, an opening range or a sentence here is wrong, write to hearthside@pleasant-hearth.net. We fix the page and the product data behind it.
