Vented or vent-free: what the difference means for your room
A vented set burns in a working wood-burning fireplace with the flue open, so the combustion products go up the chimney. Our vented sets are the Arlington Ash in 24 and 30 inches and the Willow Oak in 24 inches, rated from 55,000 to 65,000 BTU. They run on natural gas with match-light ignition. The propane conversion safety pilot kits, manual or piezo with a remote, switch a vented set to liquid propane.
A vent-free set has no flue to use, and its combustion products stay in the room. The Southern Oak (18 inches) and the Valley Oak and Wildwood (24 inches) run on natural gas or propane at 30,000 to 33,000 BTU. EPA does not support unvented gas logs in homes because of indoor air quality. California bars the sale of unvented heaters for dwellings and allows natural gas vent-free logs only with state approval.
Where your local code allows a vent-free set, CPSC says never to run one in a room where people sleep. It also asks for carbon monoxide alarms on every level and outside sleeping areas. EPA reads a persistent yellow-tipped flame as a burner out of adjustment, and advises keeping a door to the rest of the house and a window slightly open while an unvented heater runs. Can you use a Pleasant Hearth vented gas log set without a chimney?
No. A vented set needs a working fireplace with its flue open whenever the logs burn, which is what EPA advises for any gas fireplace.
Is a Pleasant Hearth vent-free set allowed where you live?
It depends on local code, so ask your city or county building department first. California bars the sale of unvented heaters for homes and allows natural gas vent-free logs only with state approval, and EPA does not support unvented gas logs indoors.
What should you have in the house before lighting Pleasant Hearth gas logs?
