Measure first
How to measure your firebox for a grate
- Measure the firebox floor across the front, just inside the opening.
- Measure it again across the back wall, which is often narrower, and take the depth from front to back.
- Pick a grate narrower than the back reading and shorter than the depth, so it sits clear of the walls.
01 Grates
Width, bars and bar thickness
A grate lifts the logs off the firebox floor so air reaches under them. Width comes first: measure the floor at the front and at the back, and choose a grate that clears the side walls. Our steel grates run from 18 to 36 inches wide, and the cast iron grate from 18 to 30.
Bar thickness and count follow the width. The 3/4 inch premium steel grate goes from five bars at 21 inches to nine at 36. On the 1/2 inch grate with ember retainer, bars run from four at 18 inches to six at 30. Its ember retainer holds small coals in the grate instead of letting them drop through.
Cast iron is the other path. The cast iron grate comes 18, 24, 27 and 30 inches wide, coated in high-temperature paint and ready without assembly, and the steel grates collect every steel width on one list.
