Bowl depth, shape and what comes with the pit
Our wood-burning pits differ in the bowl and in what surrounds it. Langston has a round bowl 12 inches deep, Killian an extra-deep one and Palmetto a round bowl with a wood grate inside. Hudson is a square steel frame on adjustable levelers, and Charlotte sets a slate top with a steel lid that turns the pit into a side table. For a pit you build yourself, pick a fire ring: a 28-inch round one, or a 36-inch square one that also stands on its own.
Before the first fire, settle where it goes. NFPA puts a fire pit outdoors only, at least 10 feet from anything that can burn, on brick, concrete or patio blocks, and clear of decks, eaves and low branches. EPA adds dry, seasoned wood at about 20 percent moisture and no burning on air quality alert days, and some towns restrict backyard fires, so ask locally.
