Bar thickness, bar count and the ember retainer
Solid steel bars carry the logs, and the steel grates come in two bar thicknesses. The 3/4 inch premium grate runs 21, 24, 30, 33 and 36 inches wide, from five bars at the narrow end to nine at the wide end. Its 33 and 36 inch widths go past anything the 1/2 inch grate comes in.
The 1/2 inch grate with ember retainer comes 18, 24, 27 and 30 inches wide with four to six bars, so it reaches the smaller fireboxes the 3/4 inch grate does not. Measure the back wall of your firebox as well as the front, and choose a width that clears it.
