Description

Arlington Ash puts seven hand-painted concrete logs in a 24-inch vented set, over a dual burner you adjust by hand at up to 55,000 BTU. It comes ready for natural gas, lights with a match and needs no electricity. A start-up kit of vermiculite, glowing ember fiber and lava rock comes in the box.

Vented logs go into a fireplace with a working chimney, and the damper stays open every time they burn. For propane, add one of our conversion kits and use a tank of at least 100 pounds, with a qualified gas professional making the connection. The chimney above the set still needs its yearly inspection.

U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, Burn Wise: Choosing Wood-Burning Appliances. Most pellet stoves need electricity to run, and a factory-built (zero-clearance) fireplace needs an insert designed and tested for that unit. Decorative gas or electric logs are not designed to be a significant source of heat. EPA does not support gas stoves or gas logs that need no outside venting, because of indoor air quality concerns, and some jurisdictions make installing an unvented gas stove illegal. National Fire Protection Association: Heating Safety tip sheet. Keep anything that can burn at least three feet from a fireplace, wood stove or other heating equipment, keep a three-foot kid-free zone around open fires, and have a qualified professional install stationary heating equipment to local codes and the manufacturer's instructions. Have heating equipment and chimneys cleaned and inspected every year by a qualified professional, give the fireplace a sturdy screen against sparks, and let ashes cool before putting them in a metal container kept a safe distance from the home. U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission: Carbon Monoxide Fact Sheet. Carbon monoxide comes from the incomplete burning of fuels including wood, propane and natural gas, and its early symptoms (headache, fatigue, shortness of breath, nausea, dizziness) resemble the flu. CPSC advises installing appliances to the manufacturer's instructions and local building codes, most of them by qualified professionals, having the heating system with its chimneys and flues inspected every year, fitting UL 2034 carbon monoxide alarms on every level and outside sleeping areas, and never running unvented fuel-burning appliances in a room where people sleep. If an alarm sounds, go outside to fresh air at once and call 911 or the fire department. Read September 26, 2026.
