Description

Square rather than round, this black steel ring measures 36 inches inside and 41.5 outside. It is 10 inches deep. Its straight sides line up with a square surround of brick or block that you lay yourself, or it can stand alone as a fire pit.

Give it a level base of concrete, brick or patio blocks and 10 feet of space from the house and anything else that can burn. Keep children and pets back from the edge. Burn only dry, seasoned wood, and shovel cold ash into a metal container with a tight lid.

National Fire Protection Association: Wildfire Prevention Tips for Fire Pits and Outdoor Fires. Use a fire pit outdoors only, at least 10 feet from anything that can burn, on a level surface that will not catch fire such as patio blocks, brick or concrete, and away from siding, decks, eaves and overhanging branches. Keep children and pets at least three feet away, use a fire pit screen, burn only clean, dry, seasoned hardwood in a wood-burning pit, and never use gasoline or other flammable liquids on the fire. Check local rules and permits first, avoid burning on windy, dry days, and put cooled ashes in a metal container with a tight-fitting lid. Read September 26, 2026.
U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, Burn Wise: Backyard Recreational Fires. For fire pits and outdoor fireplaces, EPA advises burning only dry, seasoned wood, best at about 20 percent moisture on a meter, never burning green wood, construction waste, plastic, garbage or yard waste, and not burning on air quality alert days.
